Changes have been made to AA credit cards that are designed to help consumers to save money on interest. In the past credit card providers have used repayments made by cardholder to pay off the cheapest credit first, which has left higher interest balances to accrue interest. This is something that caused a lot of controversy amongst campaign groups and consumers, and it was finally announced that new regulations would be brought in to ensure that credit card companies used the repayments from cardholders to repay the higher interest debts first.

The changes to regulations are due to come in later this year. However, a number of credit card providers have decided to throw down the gauntlet by bringing the changes in early, which mean that cardholders can start to benefit right away rather than having to wait until the changes become mandatory, which would be a few months down the line.

It has now been announced that AA credit cards have become the latest to decide to bring the new regulations in earlier than necessary, and repayments made by cardholders will now be paid against the higher interest balances on the card first before being allocated to the lower interest balances.

The changes to these AA credit cards will benefit consumers who make gradual repayments on their balances because it means that they will be able to save money on interest on their debt.

Mark Huggins, the director of AA Financial Services, said that plans were underway to make the switch, stating: “This is a vital step towards helping millions of card holders to manage their debt. It is a change that the AA wholeheartedly endorses.”

Many people these days have interest free credit cards, and this is because these cards can offer great value for money in terms of saving consumers money on the amount that they pay on their borrowing. There are different types of interest free credit cards, including interest free balance transfer credit cards and interest free purchase credit cards. There are also low interest life of balance transfer credit cards, which are designed for those that want to transfer balances from higher interest cards but need more time to clear the balance than many of the interest free credit cards offer.

However, whilst these interest free credit cards can offer many benefits to those that run their accounts responsibly by making repayments on time and for at least the amount requested the punishment can be harsh for those that fail to do this. Many people miss repayments or make late repayments on their credit card debts, and although this may have been an inadvertent oversight the banks have started to come down hard on what they class as defaulters.

The thing to bear in mind if you have one of these interest free credit cards is that they are based on contract, and whilst part of the term is for the provider to give the consumer interest free credit as per the terms the borrower also has contractual responsibility, and this is to ensure that they make repayments on time and for at least the minimum repayment as requested by the lender.

Anyone that fails to do this and makes a late payment or missed payment could therefore be classed as breaking the contract, and this gives the credit card company the right to withdraw the interest free facility. If this is done the borrower may be put into the standard rate of interest or even a higher one that this in some cases, so consumers that do miss repayments could really end up paying through the nose.

Anyone that has an interest free credit card therefore needs to ensure that they take measures to make sure that repayments are made on time. This could mean setting up a standing order or a direct debit for a set amount that covers at least the minimum repayment. This will make it easier to ensure that all repayments are met on time, and means that the cardholder will not lose the important interest free benefits of the card.

Whilst most credit card users now realise that if they make a late payment or miss a payment on their credit card debt they will be hit with a late or missed payment charge many may not be aware of the full severity of the penalties that they may face if this happens.

According to a recent report the penalties on certain credit cards may be even more severe than many consumers realise, and a missed or late payment on their credit card debt could end up costing them dearly. Experts have warned consumers to ensure that they read the small print to familiarise themselves with just how much a missed or late repayment could affect them.

Reports have stated that people who have interest free purchase or balance transfer credit cards, for example, could really lose out if they miss a payment even if only by a few days, as this could result in them having the interest free offer withdrawn altogether which means that they will suddenly be hit with interest charges on the debt.

In addition to this consumers are hit with a £12 fee for missed and late payments, and could see their credit report or rating damaged, which can make a huge difference to their financial future in the long run. Having their interest free deals withdrawn could make finances even more of a struggle for these people.

There are a number of credit cards from a wide range of providers that offer generous interest free periods of well over a year on purchases and balance transfers, which can save consumer a huge amount of money in interest. However, cardholders should always ensure that at least the minimum monthly repayment it maintained and on time, as otherwise they could lose the interest free facility.

A UK credit card provider is advising consumers to ensure that they clear their debts if they have concerns over the security of their jobs. Officials from the credit card provider and bank Vanquis have said that it could prove beneficial for those that are concerned about their jobs to clear their debts as quickly as possible including their credit card debts.

Many people have accrued a considerable amount of debt over the past couple of years with the credit crunch and the recession taking their toll on consumer finances. However, whilst the recession may officially be over the concern over job security is still heightened for many people, and many of those worried about their jobs are those that have debts.

One official from the bank said that those worried about losing their jobs needed to assess their debt levels carefully and then formulate a plan that would enable them to repay the debt as quickly as possible. Whilst many people may have some form of cover on their debts, such as Payment Protection Insurance, it is important that they read the small print in order to ensure that they will be able to make a claim in the event that they are made redundant.

Although the recession is over the rate of unemployment is still high, and many are concerned that a rising number of consumers could lose their jobs over the course of this year. This has made it important for those that have debts that they will struggle to repay if they lose their jobs to take action to get them cleared.

One Vanquis spokesperson said: “If you owe money on credit cards and loans it is important you work out a debt repayment plan to clear these debts as quickly as possible.”

A recent report has shown that holidaymakers in the UK are prepared to get themselves into debt simply so that they can get away on a summer break. It is reported that millions of people are set to get themselves into debt or in some cases even further into debt just so that they can get away on holiday this summer.

The survey was carried out by Bright Grey, and the results showed that nearly one third of UK adults that were going away this summer were getting themselves into debt in order to fund their holiday. Most of those planning to get into debt in order to enjoy a holiday were planning to use a credit card to fund their getaway.

In addition to using credit cards many of these holidaymakers are looking at other ways of financing their holidays, such as payment plans with travel agents or even borrowing the money from friends and family. Nearly 60 percent of these holidaymakers said that they did not have the money to repay their lenders back straight away, which means that many will be hit with costly interest charges.

Consumers that are planning to use their credit cards to pay for their holidays are being advised to ensure that they get the right credit card deal otherwise they could end up paying way over the odds for their time away. Often one of the choice of 0 percent purchase credit cards can prove effective, as consumers have a better chance to repay the debt before interest is charged.

Roger Edwards from Bright Grey said: “Getting away on holiday can be a high point of the year for many people, however, with one in three borrowing to pay for their getaway, it is important to make sure they don’t end up with a financial holiday hangover on their return.”

Over the past couple of years many people have become increasingly reliant on their credit cards in order to fund day to day purchases in some cases, and this has resulted in many people building up hefty credit cards debts that they simply cannot afford to make repayments on.

In the years leading up to the global financial crisis lenders were being very lax with regards to their criteria, and this meant that credit was granted to pretty much anyone that wanted it. However, over the last couple of years the global financial crisis coupled with the recession has resulted in more people maxing out their credit cards as they tried desperately to stay afloat financially.

A combination of these factors has resulted in some consumers having huge credit card debts, as well as loans and overdrafts, that they cannot afford to make repayments on, and this means that many may end up having to seek financial assistance with regards to their debt management. With lenders now said to be writing off record levels of credit card debt the problems facing many of these borrowers have become all too evident.

The number of people that are expected to become insolvent in the UK this year reflects an increase of 10 percent compared to the number of people that became insolvent last year.

One industry official said: “We stand on the brink of a personal insolvency crisis that will take years to work through the system. We know there are nearly a million people out there who are struggling with their debt. While it may be the case that these problems are resolved without help, there is a risk that they might snowball out of control.”

Credit card giant MBNA has shaken up the credit card market by making changes to it allocation of repayments, according to recent reports. The move from MBNA comes after the release of new guidelines that would make credit card firms put repayments towards the most expensive debt first. However, MBNA is putting its new rules into force four months earlier than required.

The new allocation of repayments structure with MBNA will come into force from the start of September, and officials believe that customers with the credit card firm could save a fortune in interest once the allocation of repayments has been changed to ensure that the most expensive debt is paid off first. The firm has five million credit card customers, who will be pleased to hear the news.

In the past repayments made by customers was allocated towards the cheapest debt first, leaving the higher interest debt to continue accruing interest. Whilst credit card firms were making a fortune from allocating repayments in this way many consumers were losing out, as they ended up paying huge amounts of interest on their credit card debts that were left to accrue interest.

It is thought that millions of credit card customers end up paying hundreds of pounds extra each every year as a result of their most expensive credit card debts being left to fester whilst the cheapest debt, typically low interest and interest free debt, is paid off first.

One credit card customer said: “I’m really pleased to hear that MBNA are going to make the changes early. I’ve been spending on credit cards for years, and I can’ remember the last time I didn’t have any credit card debt, because the interest is so crippling I just never seem to be able to clear the balance.”

A recent report has claimed that the number of interest free balance transfer credit cards is on the increase, with lenders now competing to help consumers to clear their debts as cheaply as possible.

Figures have shown that many customers are struggling with their existing credit card debts, and this means that a rising number of consumers may soon be hunting out the best deals on interest free balance transfer cards so that they can better handle their credit card debt.

According to one financial website, moneysavingexpert.com, there are now seven credit cards that are offering interest free balance transfers for a period of fifteen months or more, and this compares to just one that was listed a year ago.

A number of banks have now started offering long term interest free balance transfer cards, and many will be keen to net as many people as possible out of those that will be looking to transfer balances over the coming months.

For those that are looking to transfer their balances from a high interest credit card to an interest free balance transfer credit card there are a number of things to look at in order to ensure the best deal. This includes the balance transfer fee that the credit card provider charges for transferring a balance, the length of the interest free period being offered, and the eligibility for applying for the credit card.

An official from the website said that last year there was only the Virgin balance transfer credit card that was offering this sort of interest free period, but that the number of cards had now soared.

He said: “In the past, Virgin completely dominated the zero per cent balance transfer market but now there are plenty of other alternatives.”

Figures that were recently released have indicated that the level of defaults by consumers on credit cards and other forms of unsecured credit in the last quarter of last year was lower than had been expected.

The figures were released by the Bank of England, and the data showed that in the final three months of last year default levels on credit cards and other unsecured credit actually fell.

Officials from the Bank of England have now said lenders clearly overestimated the rate of defaults on unsecured borrowing in the final quarter of last year.

However, the Trends in Lending report from the Bank of England also showed that whilst the level of defaults for the final three months of last year fell, contrary to expectations, the actual value of defaults increased during the same three months.

There has also been an increase in interest rates on credit cards as a result of this, the Bank of England figures show, with the gap between the average interest rate charged on credit cards and the rock bottom Bank of England base rate, which still stands at just 0.5 percent, being wider now than it was a year ago.

Officials have said that this is the result of heightened risks for lenders amongst other things.

One of the reasons that default rates on credit cards and other unsecured credit was lower than lenders had expected in the final three months of last year was because many had been expecting unemployment levels during that period to be higher than they actually were, and had therefore based estimates and predictions based on a higher unemployment rate.

However, there was actually a surprise drop in the number of people that were out of work in the three months leading up to November 2009.

In days gone by credit card firms used to be focussed on offering credit to higher earners, leaving those on lower incomes out in the cold. However, over the past decade, up until a couple of years ago when the global credit crunch hit, credit was being offered to all sorts of people from low income earners to the wealthiest people.

However, since this time the finance markets have become far more difficult to break, and once again it seems to be the higher earners that are now the target of credit card firms.

One report has claimed that having a credit card could soon become a status symbol as it used to be before the credit boom, where only those with high income and lots of wealth would be able to brandish the plastic when at shops, restaurants etc. An analysis of the credit card market was carried out by PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the annual analysis, called Precious Plastic, indicated that annual fees will continue to increase in the future, and interest rates will rise.

Whilst annual fees were common on credit cards in the 1990s there was a change at the turn of the millennium, where the credit card market became more focussed on competition and gaining more custom, hence offering fee free cards, 0 percent interest, and various other incentives that would encourage consumers to apply for their cards. Pretty soon having a credit card was not a status symbol but a financial accessory for even those on lower incomes.

Sandra Quinn from APACS stated: “We reached a point when more people had a credit card than didn’t and when the number who had more than one outweighed the number who had none. That was when they stopped being a status symbol.”
