Earlier this month it was announced that the Prince of Pop, Michael Jackson, had decided to perform a series of concerts at the O2 Arena in London, and it came as no surprise that millions of adoring fans started to make immediate plans to try and get their hands on tickets to see their idol.

Whilst some decided that they would head down to the O2 arena and queue for days if necessary to get their hands on tickets to see the singing sensation, others decided that they would make their purchases online, and spent hours glued to their computer screens.

The day that the tickets went on sale credit and debit cards in the UK are said to have taken a real bashing, as millions of fans tried to purchase their tickets using their plastic.

However, the news was not good for everyone. The vast number of people trying to use their cards to purchase Michael Jackson tickets online caused ticket websites to crash, and as a result many cardholders have been left with no tickets and no chance of seeing their idol.

Some disgruntled fans that were left without tickets said that the ticket websites were saying that their credit and debit cards had been rejected, and they were then left waiting for hours in online queues.

One man said that he wasted nearly five hours staring at his screen as the ticket website rejected his security code and credit card every few minutes.

He said: “I wasted four-and-a-half hours watching the system reject my pass code every few minutes. At first I thought it was just due to heavy traffic and persevered, buoyed by the Michael Jackson tunes running through my head and the memory of the previous concerts I had attended. However, by 11.30am with no more tickets available, I had to conclude that O2 had screwed up somehow… what a waste of my time and energy.”

According to the results of recent research that has been carried out many Brits are not confident about repaying their credit card bills in the current financial climate.

The research was carried out by Virgin Money, and showed that many people were worried about credit card deals and being able to make repayments on their credit cards. In fact, the research showed that around 20 percent of Brits were not confident about repaying their credit card bills.

The research from Virgin Money also showed that around 12 percent of those responding to the survey said that they were ‘very unconfident’ about repaying their credit card debts, whilst a further 7 percent said that they were just ‘unconfident’ about making repayments. This equated to just over seven million people.

Officials from Virgin Money said that one of the factors that was resulting in this decreased confidence with regards to paying off credit card bills was the fact that many people were expecting their disposable income levels to drop over the course of 2009 due to a drop in income or a rise in monthly outgoings, which would leave them with less money with which to handle things like credit card debt.

Virgin Money UK managing director Rob Clifford said: “With 29 per cent of workers expecting a drop in disposable income over the next three months and next year, it is clear there is a mood of caution throughout the country.”

However, he added that many people were still confident about being able to pay their bills, stating: “There are signs of recession everywhere but there are also signs for optimism.”

Over the years credit cards have been used by millions of people for a wide range of purchases and purposes, with some using their credit cards to make larger purchases such as paying for a holiday and others using their cards to pay for purchases at certain times of the year such as Christmas and birthdays. However, over the past twelve months people have become far more reliant on credit cards for a wide range of other purposes to get them through a difficult financial period.

As a result of the ongoing global credit crunch things have become very difficult financially for many households over the past year, and instead of using their credit cards to fund special purchases or at certain times of the year many have been forced to rely on their credit cards on a regular basis to make payments on things like bills, mortgages, and more.

Many consumers have found themselves having to withdraw cash on their credit cards on a more frequent basis, which can prove very costly due to the high fees involved.

One official said: ‘People who use a credit card to withdraw cash may already be struggling under the burden of debt, and are forced to resort to this method of borrowing to make ends meet. They can ill afford to pay the exorbitant rates of interest that most lenders are now charging them.’

The charges and interest rates on credit cards have been rising over recent months even though the base interest rate has been falling, and this has caused grave concerns amongst various industry officials and even the Prime Minister, who are concerned about struggling consumers being fleeced by credit card companies.
