According to recently released figures those that use the Internet at more at risk of becoming victims of card fraud than those that do not use the Internet. A recent Home Office study was carried out and the resulted showed that of those that went online 8 percent fell victim to card fraud whereas only 2.3 percent of those that did not go online became victims of this type of crime.
The increase in card fraud means that everyone is more at risk of falling victim to this type of crime. However, the risk increases sharply for those that use the Internet, as fraudsters these days often use sophisticated methods to commit their crimes online. It is thought that around 90 percent of adults in England and Wales have a plastic card of some sort, which puts a lot of people at risk from this type of fraud.
The level of card fraud last year compared to the previous year is said to have increased quite sharply, and with many people now using the Internet to make a range of purchases it has become vital for extreme care and caution to be exercised by cardholders.
Those that use the Internet to make purchases using their credit or debit cards are advised to ensure that they are using a reputable site, and to make sure that the site is a secure one. Cardholders should also make sure that the company that they are making a purchase through has a valid address and phone number on the site so that they can be contacted.
