As the recent events with the Icelandic volcano chaos have shown us taking a credit card on holiday for emergencies is vital these days. Many of those that were on holiday when the eruption affected flights had not taken any credit cards with them, and were therefore in dire straits when it came to having to fund accommodation and food whilst they were stranded.
Now that the disruption has started to ease more people may be considering booking up their summer holidays, but many of them may have realised that they need to have a credit card with them just in case – particularly given the rumours that a second volcano in the same area could erupt in the not too distant future.
Even if you are not intending to use your credit card whilst abroad it is well worth taking it as an emergency measure, and if you do find yourself stuck in a similar difficult situation to the one seen recently you will at least be able to ensure that you have somewhere to stay and food to eat until your insurance or holiday company can sort out compensation.
Anyone that is planning their summer holiday but does not yet have a credit card that they can take should start shopping around as early as possible in order to try and find the right deal. There are a number of cards available on the market these days, and it is important that you compare the different cards on offer.
If you are only taking the credit card with you as an emergency measure then you don’t need to worry about looking at things such as rewards, as hopefully you won’t have to use the card. However, you may want to find a card such as a 0 percent interest card so that if you do have to use the credit card you have time to repay the balance without paying interest rather than having to pay interest on it. Also, look at fees such as foreign transactions fees, as these can vary between providers.
You can use the Internet to compare different credit cards from a range of providers, and this will enable you to see which cards offer the best deals in terms of interest free periods. The longer you have to repay the balance without being hit with interest the better, as this will save you a small fortune in interest payments if you do end up having to use the card to fund emergencies.
