"Getting a credit card could become more difficult for consumers"

In the current financial climate many people are struggling with their finances, and this means that many are looking for financial support through various forms of credit. One of the types of credit that many people are looking to use to tide them over is credit cards, but some of those that try and get credit cards may experience problems.

A recent report has indicated that getting a credit card could prove increasingly difficult, as credit card providers are continuing to be more stringent with regards to who they will give credit to. Higher risk consumers are still being treated with extreme caution by credit card firms and those with a less than perfect credit rating could find themselves really struggling to get finance.

David Black from Defaqto said that many consumers may have to face up to the fact that they may not be able to get a credit card, and will therefore have to look for alternative means of getting the finance that they need. For those that are relying on being able to get a credit card to help them out of a tight financial spot this will come as bad news.

With the summer holidays coming up there may be many people that are planning to try and get a credit card to take with them or to pay for the holiday, and again many of these people may be unprepared for the rejection that they might face when they make an application for the card. Consumers are advised to make an application early so that they have time to look at alternatives if their application is rejected.

Mr Black stated: “Providers have become increasingly choosy about who they will lend to and, if they will lend, at what rate. The number of credit card applications being rejected has shot up.”
