"Orange to launch contactless credit card"

By admin | February 3rd, 2010 | Credit Cards

Mobile phone giant Orange is set to launch its own contactless credit card in partnership with banking giant Barclaycard. The card will be co-branded and operated by Barclaycard, and will offer customers a range of flexible options when it comes to their credit card use.

With the new credit card from Orange customers will be able to set their own spending levels, make purchases for £10 or less using contactless technology, and choose from a range of methods with regards to how they are kept up to date with their accounts.

The credit card is set to work in a similar way to the Barclays Oyster card, which also offers contactless technology, where purchases for £10 or under can be made by simply tapping the card on the special readers without the need to enter a PIN or sign anything. Marc Overton from Orange UK said that the credit card plans gave the company further opportunity to grow and evolve the business and the Orange brand.

He stated: “A key part of our UK strategy is to grow and evolve our business, whilst at the same time provide extra value for our customers. In partnering with Barclaycard, we believe we’re doing just that, and today’s announcement is the next exciting step in the journey to the future world of consumers paying for everyday goods on their mobile phone.”

The credit card will also offer the benefits of a loyalty scheme, as customers will be able to one Orange credit card reward point for every pounds spent on the card, which they can then collect and use towards vouchers for High Street shops or for discounts off Orange products.

A Barclaycard official stated: “We are seeing demand from both retailers and customers for ever more convenient ways to pay and accept payment and believe that mobile and contactless technologies are key to meeting those needs. This announcement shows how, in partnership with Orange, Barclaycard is starting to make mobile contactless payments a step closer for UK consumers.”
