"Consumers should prepare themselves for credit card bills after Christmas"

By admin | January 6th, 2010 | Credit Cards

It is all too easy to get carried away with the festivities of the Christmas period, and in the run up to Christmas many people rush out or get online with their credit cards and spend, spend, spend without thinking of the consequences.

However, it is important for consumers to bear in mind that once the excitement of Christmas and New Year is over there could be a hefty credit card bill on its way to them, and in around two to three weeks many people will be dreading opening the post and seeing just how much debt they have accrued on the plastic over Christmas.

This is why industry experts are urging consumers to be cautious when it comes to credit card use, and to ensure that they have measures in place to deal with repayment of the debt that they build up on their credit cards over the festive season. Some people start to spend frivolously as Christmas gets nearer, and more often than not this spending is funded by their credit cards.

Consumers are advised to stick to a list when it comes to gifts, food, outings, and other Christmas related purchases and not just spend for the sake of it just because they have a credit card handy.

For those that have already spent on their credit cards it is important to ensure that preparations are made for the repayment of the debt. Some people may already have a 0 percent purchase card that they have spent on, which means that they may be able to look forward to a longer repayment period within which to repay the debt without being hit with interest.

Others may already have made provisions to pay off the credit card debt in full in January, which means that they will not have to worry about interest charges.

For those that have not yet determined how they will clear the balance, and who do not have a 0 percent purchase card, it may be a good idea to start looking for a 0 percent balance transfer credit card on to which they can transfer the debt to reduce the interest that they will have to pay on their Christmas spending.
