Just weeks before Christmas a credit card company has informed hundreds of workers that they are losing their jobs. The job cuts were announced earlier this month to all employees that worked at Barclaycard’s Partner Finance operations centre, which is based in Glasgow.
The workers were told that the company was planning to axe three hundred and fifty jobs, and that the work would be transferred to other centres around the UK including the company’s base in Cardiff.
The employees in Glasgow were told about the proposed job cuts just weeks before Christmas. The company has also made it clear that all members of staff at the Glasgow centre will be affected by the job cuts.
The centre has been open for nearly a decade, opening in 2000 after Barclays took a 90 percent stake in Clydesdale Financial Services. The Glasgow centre deals with loans that are made at point of sale at various retailers and companies, and also incorporates a call centre.
Barclays has said that the decision was made as part of its ongoing commitment to improve efficiency and provide better service to customers. The decision is to be made properly in March of next year, and Barclays has said that prior to this it will enter into consultations with employees. In the meantime staff members will remain in post, although support and advice will be given with regards to retraining and redeployment.

I am speaking to employees today to explain our plans and tell them we will make a comprehensive package of advice and support available to them if the proposals go ahead. I consider that this is the right strategy in the context of the highly competitive industry in which we operate.”
