Over the years rewards based credit cards and cash back credit cards have become very popular amongst many consumers who want to earn a little something back from the credit card companies rather than simply paying the firms interest.
Those that have benefited most from these credit cards are those that clear their credit card balances in full each month, as these are the people that do not have to pay any interest and also get to earn rewards or money back for using their credit card in the usual way.
However, in the current financial climate, with credit card firms along with other financial institutions trying to shore up their finances, some credit card companies have used these cash back and rewards schemes to try and claw back some revenue.
They have done this be either cutting the perks that are offered on the credit cards or by making customers spend more on the card before they can get their hands on the rewards.
It has been reported that the financial giant Citi is now cutting the perks on its Shell cashback credit card, and this will see the level of cashback that consumers can earn slashed as of next month.
Previously customers with this credit card were able to earn 3 percent cash back on purchases made at Shell forecourts, and then 1 percent cash back on purchases made elsewhere, but these levels are set to plummet.
From next month customers using the card at Shell forecourts will earn only 1 percent cash back, which is just a third of the previous level, and the amount of cash back that can be earned on purchases from other places will be slashed by seventy five percent, falling from 1 percent cash back to just 0.25 percent.
