As industry officials are always warning us it is vital not to give out your credit card account details to anyone that calls you claiming to be providing a service or claiming to be from some company or other, and even to those that turn up at the door claiming to be from a particular company.
It has also been made clear that credit card consumers should never give out their credit card PIN to anyone, even if the person claims to be from their bank or from the police.
However, despite these warnings it appears that many people are still falling victim to these sorts of credit card scams, and this has been reflected in the level of complaints received about a car selling credit card scam last year.
It is thought that the car selling scam has been costing consumers around £3 million every year. The way in which the fraudsters have been running the scam is by approaching people that are trying to sell their cars and stating that they can find them a buyer and get the vehicle sold to them. They are asking for upfront fees of up to £99 according to reports.
However, in many cases the money has been taken from the credit card holder’s account and no buyer turns up, leaving the car unsold and the cardholder out of pocket.
The advice service Consumer Direct received around sixteen hundred complaints about this scam last year, but many officials claims that the actual number of people that have been taken in by this scam is far higher than this.
One industry official said: “High pressure selling alongside cold calling makes this a very successful scam, often leaving the consumer with very little chance of obtaining redress.”
