"Cardholders warned over telephone card fraud scams"

By admin | August 4th, 2009 | Credit Cards

Credit card holders are being alerted over a rash of telephone credit card scams, and are being urged by the authorities to avoid giving out any credit card details on the phone if they have not solicited the phone call themselves.

This comes after an incident that occurred recently where a cardholder was contacted by someone claiming to be from BT and stating that their bill was overdue.

The bogus caller apparently tried to prove to the customer that they were from BT by stating that they could disconnect and then reconnect the customer’s line.

What had actually happened, according to police, was that the caller simply pressed the mute button and then pretended to hang up, making it sound and appear as though the line had been disconnected and then reconnected again.

As a result of this the customer believed the bogus caller, who then asked for credit card details to settle the outstanding bill, and gave out vital credit card information to the bogus caller.

Following this several hundred pounds is said to have been taken from the credit card account. Police in North Yorkshire have now issued a warning about this and similar scams, and are urging consumers to be far more careful with their credit card details.

One police official said: “This case highlights the lengths that criminals will go to invent a highly believable ploy to get you to part with your banking details. It is always better to be safe than sorry and a quick call to BT Customer Services will clear up whether or not this type of call is genuine.”
