Industry officials from the UK Cards Association have recently stated that consumers that intend to use their credit cards whilst abroad need to ensure that they exercise caution so that they do not have to face the extortionate fees and charges that can come with credit card use overseas.
The warning comes as millions of Brits make plans to head off on their summer holidays over the coming week, many of them armed with their credit cards.
The association said that consumers need to exercise common sense when using their credit cards abroad, and that they needed to take additional precautions not only to protect themselves against the slew of costly charges that can be applied when using the credit card abroad but also against becoming a victim of credit card fraud whilst abroad, which is a type of fraud that has become more prevalent over recent years.
The group said that a holiday can be ruined for some people as a result of credit card problems, either because they suddenly face a bill that is far higher than they had anticipated due to additional fees and charges that have been slapped on, or worse still as a result of having their credit card details stolen and becoming a victim of crime, which can cause real inconvenience at what should be a relaxing time.
One expert said: “Only take cards with you that you intend to use and leave any others in a secure place at home. When you are overseas, never let your card out of your sight and never tell anyone your pin number.”
He added: “It is always worth checking with your card company or looking at their website to see which of these fees are applicable to your cards. As a rule of thumb, you are going to be better off using your credit card for purchases – especially those over £100 – and taking cash out of cash machines with your debit card.”
