"Retail giant to trial tap and go technology"

By admin | June 4th, 2009 | Credit Cards

Over recent years more and more consumers that don’t want the hassle and danger of carrying money around and don’t want the inconvenience of writing cheques have turned to plastic cards to make transactions when making purchases.

This includes debit cards, credit cards, and store cards, all of which have provided consumers with ease, speed, flexibility, and convenience.

However, many consumers could not enjoy a greater degree of speed and convenience with tap and go cards, which will not require a signature or a PIN to be entered.

The tap and go card technology is already being trialled at a number of smaller retailers by banking giant Barclays. However, according to reports a major retailer has now jumped onboard, and is planning to trial the technology in the hope that it will speed things up at checkouts and make things easier for consumers.

Retail giant Boots is the latest to make the decision to test this technology, and officials from the firm expect it to be very successful.

Tap and go terminals will be installed in fifteen branches of Boots in London and six branches in Liverpool by the end of this year, according to reports.

The cards can be used to make purchases of up to ten pounds without having to enter a PIN or sign a receipt. The cost of the transaction then gets automatically deducted from the account of the cardholder.

One official from MasterCard stated: ‘Consumers and retailers in other parts of Europe, the US and Asia are already embracing the ease and safety of contactless payments in retail environments where speed is essential. We believe UK consumers will also welcome the arrival of a new way to pay.’

Another official from Barclaycard said: ‘Consumer feedback highlights the increasing demand for contactless payments.’
