It has recently been revealed that many spenders in the UK are in possession of a number of credit cards, but for a number of different reasons have decided to keep these credit cards a secret from their partners.
Recent research was carried out by the Halifax, and the results showed the extent to which many Brits were hiding their cards from their loved ones, and showed some of the reasons behind their secrecy over credit cards.
It is thought that hundreds of thousands of credit cards that are held by Brits are being kept secret from their partners. It is thought that well over 200,000 credit cards could be secret cards that the partners of the holders do not know about. One of the main reasons that was identified for keeping credit cards a secret was the wish for the partner not to find out about debt levels. Some other people that were hiding their credit cards from partners said that they were doing this because the card was only there for use in an emergency.
One industry official said that it was vital that cardholders that were keeping their credit cards a secret from their partners thought about the reason that they were doing this. He added that it was important to be honest with a partner about debt levels and things such as credit cards as this sort of thing could affect a couple’s ability to secure other products and services in both of their names, especially in the current climate.
It was further revealed that the global credit crunch has played its part in this secrecy, with many people panicking about their debts, finding that they cannot afford to make repayments, and being too scared to tell their partners. The credit crunch is also said to have led to an increase in arguments amongst couples in relation to finances.
