"Is a credit building credit card a good thing?"

By admin | April 2nd, 2009 | Featured

Anyone that has previously had, or still has, bad credit will know that once your credit rating has plummeted it can be extremely difficult to get further credit.

Yet, without the opportunity to get further credit you can never improve your credit rating, which puts many people in something of a catch 22 situation, where they need to get credit to improve their credit rating but they need to improve their credit rating before they can get credit.

With the current recession, soaring job losses, and the bleak financial climate, it seems that the number of people that are set to fall behind with repayments on mortgage loans, credit cards, loans, finance, and bills is likely to rocket, and this means that an increasing number of people will find themselves in a situation where their credit rating falls. The future can be very difficult for those that do find themselves in this situation, and things that many people take for granted such as being able to get a mortgage for a home or get a loan to buy a car suddenly become near impossible tasks.

However, there are some lenders that do offer products designed to help those that have seen their credit rating plummet, and this includes a number of lenders that offer credit cards designed to improve credit ratings, which are known as credit building cards. The aim of these cards is to allow those that have damaged their credit through things like defaults, poor financial management, bankruptcy, and the like, to prove that they can now manage their money better, which in time could help to improve their credit score.

The idea behind the cards is that the borrower uses the card in the usual way, and then makes repayments in the usual way. However, it is vital that the repayments are made on time, and for at least the minimum amount requested, as otherwise the only thing that will happen – aside from being hit with hefty credit card fees – is that the credit rating will take yet another knock, making a bad situation even worse. By using the card and then making responsible repayments the cardholder can look forward to seeing some improvement to their credit rating over time, although this can be a long process and does not happen overnight.

There are pros and cons to these credit building credit cards, and any consumer hoping to use one of these to boost their credit should be aware of these. On the upside these credit cards give consumers with bad credit a chance to try and get their credit back up to scratch, albeit a slow process, and this means that in the future you can start looking at more mainstream lenders and enjoy better rates on your borrowing. There are also a number of providers that offer these cards, so even for those with bad credit there is a limited choice of providers available, although these are, of course, subject to status and eligibility.

On the downside these credit cards often charge extremely high rates of interest, and for those making only the minimum repayment each month it can take forever to repay the balance, which could result in you messing up your finances again. One way around this is to ensure that you use the card regularly but then repay the balance in full each month. This way you won’t have to pay any interest at all on your borrowing yet you still get to enjoy the credit building benefits that these cards can offer.
