Credit card protection (inc passports, driving licence, etc)

Is it necessary to purchase such protection? If cards are lost or stolen, doesn't the provider cover you anyway? I travel abroad often but only take one debit and one credit card with me, so don't need blanket cancellation. If you lose/have stolen your wallet, driving licence, passports, this would be reported to the police anyway.

Is there an "excess" to pay when claiming.

Presently we have Barclaycard protection but do not use Barclaycard any more. We find Nationwide beneficial for abroad and Tesco for their points, in the UK.

If you do consider I continue with my card protection can you recommend any particular company. I currently renew annually but a longer period would probably be more economical.

Many thanks. B Roberts
