There is nothing unusual in having tarnished credit these days, as the level of consumer debt and the state of the financial markets in the UK have resulted in many people struggling to keep up with repayments, whether this is on bills, credit card debts, mortgage, or other financial commitments.
Of course, getting into bad credit is something that should be avoided, as the consequences can be serious, ranging from damaging your chances of getting credit in the future to risking your home in the event that you have defaulted on mortgage repayments.
You may have heard the term ‘blacklisted’ being banded around in terms of your credit rating, and threats of being blacklisted have been used in some cases to try and get consumers to make repayments on their financial commitments. However, in the UK there is no financial blacklist as such, so you cannot actually be blacklisted. However, you can find yourself in a position where you are unable to get finance because of the state of your credit, and this could be classed as a similar situation to being blacklisted.
When the term blacklisted is used with regards to your credit it usually means that your credit history and rating is in such a bad state that you will not be able to get credit for a long time to come. Your credit can be affected in a number of ways, and in order to minimise on the impact that a poor credit rating can have you need to do all that you can to get your credit back on track as quickly as possible. There are ways to do this, but there is certainly no miracle cure, so do not expect an overnight solution.
One of the major factors that will affect the state of your credit is the way that you pay your bills and debts. If you make your repayments on time and for at least the amounts requested each month then your credit should not suffer. However, regular missed or late repayments, or failing to pay at least the minimum amounts can result in your credit getting damaged. In order to try and get your credit back on track you will need to start ensuring that your payments are up to date, on time, and for the right amounts.
Another thing that can affect your credit and make it appear that you may be ‘blacklisted’ is a mistake or inaccurate information on your credit report, which means that the problem may not even be your fault. Human or computer error can easily result in your credit getting damaged, so you should check through your credit report on a regular basis in order to identify any potential problems, inaccuracies, or suspicious transactions. In order to get the issue sorted out you should then contact the credit referencing agency in order to get the information removed or queried.
